Effective, Compassionate THERAPY
providING on-site and online only
There are times in everyone’s life when our problems seem overwhelming; and although we may have support, seeking a professional counselor to evaluate and guide us forward can make a positive difference. Using clinically tested and evidenced-based interventions, I work with clients to explore the issues and find solutions that lead to personal empowerment, knowledge, and confidence to face what life presents next. Services are provided at the client’s home, school, and daycare for children 2-13 yrs, and video/text therapy to clients 14+ yrs.
With over a decade of experience working with individuals and families, I have helped with a wide variety of emotional and behavioral issues, as well as provided a range of interventions. There is not one solution for everyone, so I develop an individualized treatment plan, based on the client’s strengths, weaknesses, needs, and goals.
As a Registered Play Therapist, I have completed specialized training and clinical experience in working with young and non-verbal individuals. Play therapy is simply a counseling approach specifically developed for children, using toys, art, and games to facilitate progress. I will be honored to speak with you further about my experience and services.
I am a proud mom of 2 beautiful children. I started this blog in February 2012 as a way to talk about life issues, as well as those I often see in therapy. I love to share new ideas, techniques, and other areas of interest to women, men, parents, and professionals. Please enjoy the blog and be sure to comment!
Master of Arts in Psychology – Houston Baptist University
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology – University of Texas at Tyler
License and Certification
Licensed Professional Counselor- Supervisor
Registered Play Therapist
In 2001, I graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. Following graduation, I worked at East Texas Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Center as a psych technician. It was here where I worked with acute mental illness and substance addiction. This facility had a floor devoted to children and teens receiving individual counseling, group therapy, and challenged themselves in activities such as rope courses-my first experience with children and adolescents.
My clinical experience in counseling started in 2007 in a private practice setting with a small group of counselors. I worked with individuals, groups, couples, and families on a variety of problems, including marriage and relationships, mood disorders, divorce, and teen counseling. It was here that I learned the value of connecting with my client and establishing a solid therapeutic relationship before real change can occur. I also facilitated a support group for teens within a divorce recovery program. I also developed and facilitated a class at a local middle school called “Girl Talk,” which aimed to combat relational aggression and bullying among adolescent girls. I focused on teaching positive communication skills, empathy, and the damage that gossip and bullying can leave.
In February 2008, I graduated from Houston Baptist University with a MA in Psychology and obtained my license as an LPC-Intern. I was then invited to start the counseling program at MedCare Pediatric Group, a pediatric rehab center specializing in speech, physical, and occupational therapy where I worked as part of the admin staff while attending graduate school. The owner felt that counseling services would be a beneficial adjunct to the services they already provided to children. Beginning a new program was challenging, exhausting, exciting, and an awesome learning experience. It was here where I gained valuable experience working with a large variety of childhood issues, such as developmental and speech delays, Autism and Asperger’s, special medical issues and behavioral and emotional disorders. Working with so many children, and many who could not communication through words, I began my journey towards becoming a Registered Play Therapist. This simply means that I have completed classroom instruction and clinical supervision in skills specifically geared towards children. In addition to providing individual child counseling, I also offered parenting consultations, family therapy, and worked closely with the team of Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Pathologists to coordinate an inclusive treatment plan for many of my patients.
In 2009, I completed my internship, as well as play therapy training, and earned my license as a Licensed Professional Counselor and certification as a Registered Play Therapist! I continued to work at MedCare as a supervisor over the growing counseling team, as well as provide clinical services to the children. I gained valuable skills as a therapist, as well as learning what it takes to run a business and manage others. In 2012, I sought training to be an LPC-Supervisor. I am now able to the supervisor and mentor new counselors in the field. This new role has been such a joy for me and I look forward to continuing to grow this area of my practice.
In August of 2012, I started a private practice in the Humble/Kingwood area near Houston, Texas. My prior experiences gave me the tools necessary to work with wide range issues in counseling.
Today, I live and practice in the Dallas, TX area. I am committed to growing the field of telemental health, and to providing services to children in a home or school setting. I believe these avenues offer clients an opportunity to receive the help they need, even if life circumstances make it difficult.
